The Speir Lab Values
Our lab values are based on six core pillars (in no particular order) that guide how we operate in the lab, the field, the classroom, and beyond.
Mutual Respect Mutual respect is the foundation of a positive lab environment. We will culture an environment where everyone is valued for who they are, their experiences, and unique perspectives that they bring to the table. Collaboration Our lab is built on collaboration, acknowledging that no scientific product is truly an individual effort. Even when working alone, we will work alongside and support each other. Kindness & Understanding We will be friendly, optimistic, generous, and considerate to others and ourselves. We will strive to create an environment of concern, care, and empathy, so we can function as a happy and (physically & mentally) healthy team. Accountability We will keep each other accountable and follow through on deliverables. This is essential to maintaining high quality collaboration. Clarity We will operate under clear roles and expectations (that’s partly what this document is for!). Though the expectations may be high, you won't be in the dark as to what Shannon expects from you as a contributing, collaborative lab member. |
Proactive Communication
In respecting each other and each other’s time, we will proactively communicate. At times, this may require “hard” conversations, but an intentional approach to communication is essential to maintain a positive lab culture.

Creating an Inclusive Lab Space
In living our lab values, we are committed to creating a safe and welcoming lab environment for team members of all backgrounds. We welcome members from all backgrounds regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, age, or veteran status.
"We understand that scientific excellence depends on creativity, that creativity emerges from diversity, and that the advantages of diversity are realized through inclusion." –David Asai As a lab, we work together to understand team member’s unique perspectives and backgrounds. In doing so, we will create an environment in which each member feels their voice is valued and respected. Some specific actions we will take act as a cohesive and inclusive team include:
